911 Coordinator – Job Description
The 911 Coordinator oversees the planning, operation, and maintenance of a jurisdiction’s emergency communications systems. The Coordinator ensures that 911 services—including call taking, dispatching, addressing, mapping, database management, and technology infrastructure—operate efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with State and Federal regulations. The Coordinator is also responsible for reporting weekly to the Board of County Commissioners and Monthly to the 911 Board to insure 911 Operations run smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Oversight
- Manage day-to-day operations of the 911 communications system, including CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch), telephony, radio systems, GIS/mapping, and related technologies.
- Coordinate with public safety agencies (police, fire, EMS) to ensure effective communication workflows and service delivery.
- Monitor system performance and respond to outages, disruptions, or service issues.
Addressing & GIS
- Maintain the Master Street Address Guide (MSAG) and oversee addressing for new developments.
- Work with GIS staff to ensure accurate and updated mapping layers for 911 dispatch.
- Validate address information for emergency response accuracy.
Compliance & Administration
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including E911 and NG911 (Next Generation 911) standards.
- Maintain required records, reports, and documentation.
- Prepare budgets and manage contracts or vendor relationships for communications equipment and services.
Technology & System Management
- Coordinate upgrades, testing, and maintenance of 911 systems (e.g., CAD, radio consoles, 911 call handling equipment).
- Assist with or lead planning and deployment of Next Generation 911 technologies.
- Maintain relationships with IT departments, telecom providers, and equipment vendors.
Public Safety Coordination
- Serve as a liaison between local government, emergency service providers, state 911 offices, and regional communication authorities.
- Participate in emergency management planning, disaster response coordination, and continuity-of-operations planning (COOP).
Work Environment
- Office setting with periods of on-call availability for system issues.
- Occasional fieldwork for addressing, equipment inspections, or coordination with agencies.
- Participation in emergency operations during major incidents.
